Allosaurus is a genus of dinosaur belonging to the Allosauridae family. The Japanese name is Iryu. A large carnivorous theropod that lived in North America during the late Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era (approximately 155 to 145 million years ago). Allosaurus was a bipedal predator with a large skull and many large, sharp teeth. The average total length (from the head to the tip of the tail) is 8.5 m, and fossil fragments of individuals estimated to have reached 12 m have been found. It had large, powerful hindlimbs (legs) and smaller, three-toed forelimbs (arms), and balanced itself with a long, heavy tail. Allosaurus was once at the top of the food chain during the formation of the Morrison Formation. It is thought that it preyed on herbivorous dinosaurs (ornithischians such as Stegosaurus and sauropods such as Apatosaurus) that existed at the same time. Although it is sometimes depicted as if they were hunting large herbivorous sauropod dinosaurs in groups, evidence of cannibalism has also been found.
